To keep my labels short for quick scanning, it often helps a lot to just append a question mark. Instead of additions like 'problems with' or 'x or its alternative', a simple '?' suffices.

Another practical tip: I try not to forget to copy and paste the source URL onto my map (yielding a pale icon labeled "Source"), because the idea of thought-condensing only works when I can quickly get back to the uncondensed versions.

In today's information tsunami, it's an obligation, or at least a politeness, towards the reader to facilitate quick scanning and readability. Often forgotten is macro and micro markup: bold for speed-up eye catchers, and italic for slowdown specialities.

For my digital notes I use underlining to indicate a link (which need not be directly clickable) since bold and italics are sufficient for other highlighting. On paper however, underline has multiple roles, but I prefer the pencil over marker pens because it encourages text scribbling beyond highlighting.
